One of the joys of Reggie’s
26 Seeds class for me has been the opportunity
to sample many different skills and decide which
I want to invest significant time in, then dive
in deeply and commit to practice. Reggie’s a
good teller of tales and when he presented this
hand with the back story of how he discovered it
only increased my enthusiasm for this rather
obscure hand.
During class it was obvious I was enjoying myself and Reggie urged me to practice the “ Susanne Gropp” hand daily for 30 days and to save my efforts for comparisons that would reveal my improvement. I’ve been doing just that and after two weeks or so, I’m not at all content with the results yet but the increase in skill is clear and I intend to keep going long term, experimenting and refining as I go. I can spot all my many errors but rather than letting it discourage me, I remind myself that knowing where I fell short helps me go on to do better, so I lightly circle the shortcomings and observe, then repeat the piece again and notice the improvement. Finally I erase the correction marks.| This piece was done with watercolors and sumi ink in a thick sketchbook I purchased from Cornelissen & Sons, a breathtakingly inspiring art supply store near the British Museum in London. What a joy it is to fall in love with a new hand and to fold it into one’s joyful practice of calligraphy.
