Week # 34
* * * * * * * * * * This work is by Mina Taylor Giving thanks When Reggie introduced the Tom Perkins alphabet I wasn’t very much impressed. But the more I worked with it, the more I liked it’s gentle quirkiness. Every year I design a calendar and I needed a page for November. So I thought about the phrase “giving thanks”. First worked out the spacing in pencil then black ink. And then I sketched it on to 140 lb hot press fabriano paper. I mixed some watercolors in fall colors and applied them with a speedball C-2 nib. The child’s hands photograph is one I took a decade ago. Reggie had suggested that I put a bundle of wheat in the center - and that looked cool. Then I remembered this hand photo I had taken 10 years ago. In Photoshop, I was able to layer it selecting the calligraphy and popping those Perkins shapes spaces out of the hands. There’s a gradation layer at the bottom of the hands so they fade in. I liked the hands because they suggest that giving thanks can happen at any age. ![]() ![]()
