Stand Firm... My first introduction to the St. John’s Bible was when I viewed an exhibit featuring some of the original vellum pages of the SJB in the Oklahoma City Museum of Art several years ago. It was impressive and inspiring. A few years later the Baylor Moody Memorial Library acquired the seven volumes of the St. John’s Bible Heritage Edition, and our Waco Calligraphy Guild has had several experiences in viewing and studying this magnificent work of art and calligraphy. I was thrilled when Reggie offered a class about the four scripts from the SJB. Our guild meets at the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Waco. Each year in the fall the church presents an Art as Worship Exhibit with a theme. This year’s theme was “Community”. Since I had learned the four scripts of the St. John’s Bible in Reggie’s class, I decided to use those to create an exhibit piece in a format that has some of the SJB features. I used the Incipit Script to write the theme’s focus verse and used the Bible Script for the verses following it. Versals were used at the beginning of the two passages. In the class we used gilding for the gold on Versals, but I chose to use Finetec gold for this piece. For the border around the main text, I used Freely Written Caps at a 15-degree slant, but I made the letters straight instead of curved. The illustration at the top was done on a gel print background. The trickiest part of this piece was writing within defined borders on both sides of the text. It required a lot of attention to spacing. ___________________________________________________________ NEW! on Zoom
Yes! I
am
teaching it again this year. 2024 was a great
success in terms of sign ups and fun. I only teach
this four month course once a year so I hope you can
make time for it on your calligraphy calendar.
