Dust, Sweat and Blood

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is
marred by dust, sweat, and blood. A man who knows great enthusiasm and
great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause. Who in the end,
knows the triumph of high achievement, and if he fails, at least fails while
daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls
who know neither victory or defeat.

Dust, Sweat, & Blood came out of the May class in 26 Seeds, A Year to Grow.
We were studying many styles of Roman Capitals and more variations of
Italic to use in high contrast compositions. We also learned to properly grind
stick ink, focusing while grinding and mentally preparing to
write. Grinding stick ink was a revelation and a pleasure, it was so dense and
creamy. The dark red looked like blood! The words dust, sweat, and blood
jumped out from the Roosevelt quote and inspired the use of dramatic bloodred,
chunky Neuland caps. The rest of the quote was written
in a contrasting spiky italic. The smudges of charcoal and graphite represent
the struggle inherent in high achievement.
