Mind-blowing Optimism

"This piece was inspired by a friend who surprised me with a birthday gift package filled with a mushroom growing kit and other mushroom-themed paraphernalia. It lifted my spirits that day, unwrapping several individually wrapped items, some of them lettered with the letter “L”, others wrapped in orange themed papers, and even some brightly colored Pacific Northwest autumnal leaves. The package also included a brush pen, which was synchronous with a weekend of brush lettering with Reggie.

After that brush script weekend, I showed her my practice letters and she was so enthusiastic I thought to myself that I just had to create a brush script piece for her as a Thank You. The phrase “mind-blowing optimist” was stuck in my head and perfectly highlighted her attitude. And the play on words with psychedelic mushrooms would suit her sense of humor. I had a short weekend to lay it out and pull it off in order to pop it in the mail to her.

I had some other time constraints which meant the final piece also needed to  fulfill a Reggie assignment of Counterpoint. So it was designed with a blend of “formal” Romanesque serif letters, informal brush script, and finished with the carved stone style of Tom Perkins’ sans serif caps - a letter that I now associate with tombstones. The exact opposite of the liveliness of my friend and the brush script.

Watercolor and gouache on Arches 90# hot press, Pentel water brush and Mitchell broad edge and pointed nibs.
