“Shadow Shapes”
Shadow Shapes is a quote from the poem,
"Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam".
The curvilinear bands of letters are representative of human forms that change size and shape as they evolve through time and space. Shadow Shapes was created on a piece of1 1/2 " thick redwood, 18 3/4 " tall and 11" wide with its edges rounded on a band saw and prepared with a coat of polyurethane. I created my design on paper then cut and covered the positive shapes I wanted to remain on the surface of the wood from a special 3M product used for masking. The wood was then sandblasted and the negative areas not protected by masking were cut away. These textured areas were accented by an application of walnut stain, then 23K gold leaf and variegated gold leaf were added to the shapes that contained letters for contrast. I did this many years ago in a six month class with Reggie Ezell in which we explored a variety of media. It opened my eyes to endless possibilities.
